May 2023 – #GFCUCares Events

50th Annual Heroes Luncheon

Thursday, March 25th was the 50th Annual Heroes Luncheon sponsored in part by #GFCUCares. It was a lovely tribute to the fallen heroes in our community and ensuring their families are not forgotten. Our President and CEO Ken Raymie sits on the board of The 100 Club of San Antonio, which offers a wide array of support in Bexar County such as financial assistance within 24 hours of a line of duty death, higher education scholarships for children of fallen first responders and financial assistance/ counseling to seriously injured first responders.

Communities In Schools of SA Fundraising Luncheon

GFCU VP, Brent Mora, sits on the board of Communities In Schools of San Antonio. This organization helps provide basic needs, academic assistance, life skills and so much more to several schools in the #SanAntonio area. On Thursday, May 18th, they hosted a luncheon to raise funds that will continue to provide direct help onsite at 160 campuses in the area, an instrumental part in ensuring the success of so many children.

Sports Hall of Fame Tribute

San Antonio Sports hosted its annual Sports Hall of Fame Tribute, honoring local champions who have made an impact in the world of sports. GFCU had the pleasure of attending and supporting the endeavors of an organization that does so much to help keep our community moving through the power of fitness. This event benefits #iPlay, a free sports program for kids in area schools. #GFCUCares

National Police Week

We had the great honor of visiting the San Antonio Police Department, Balcones Heights PD, and Castle Hills Police Department stations on Friday, May 12th. Our #GFCUCares Team went out to share our gratitude and sincere appreciation for their sacrifice and unwavering dedication. We also delivered goodies from Panaderia Jiménez & Coffee Shop! National Police Week is a collaborative effort of many organizations dedicated to honoring America’s law enforcement community. We give our respect to these officers and remember those who have lost their lives protecting our communities.

2023 Corporate Cup Charity Donation

Generations FCU had the great privilege of presenting local charities with donations totaling $57,128.81. This amount was raised by GFCU staff, members, and community partners in our bid for the 2023 Corporate Cup Charity Challenge title. All funds are invested into local charities, helping our neighbors in a myriad of ways. This year’s beneficiaries are San Antonio Sports, Haven for Hope, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio, the San Antonio Food Bank, and South Texas Blood & Tissue.

South Texas Blood & Tissue Blood Drive

We had a great turnout at our Castle Hills Branch on Tuesday, May 9th for our South Texas Blood & Tissue Blood Drive. It is estimated that someone needs blood every two seconds and that one pint of blood can save up to three lives. Our combined blood drives this year have collected enough blood to save 99 lives! We are grateful to our members, staff, and business partners who volunteered today to give blood and save lives! #GFCUCares  #makingwaves #donateblood

Spring Siclovia

We were happy to roll with the YMCA of Greater San Antonio at this year’s Spring Siclovia event with the #GFCUCares Team this past Sunday, May 7th. We got to hang out with our San Antonio Fire Department friends, hand out paletas, and play in the streets with the best of our city. #makingwaves #GFCU #playinthestreets #SAFD

International Firefighters’ Day

#GFCUCares was super excited to get out and honor our local San Antonio Fire Department heroes on International Firefighters’ Day. We took pan dulce from Panaderia Jiménez & Coffee Shop to give thanks to the men and women who give so carelessly for our community every day. May 4th is International Firefighters’ Day because it was linked to the feast day of St. Florian. St Florian was the first known commander of a firefighting squad in the Roman Empire. He lost his life, as well as those of his colleagues, for protecting the same humane idea that firefighters all over the world share even today.
